mountains of all Aegean islands.
The island is particularly fertile and most are covered with olive
groves and vineyards. The wine dell'uva Vathy enjoys an excellent
reputation.
The island is home to about 44,000 inhabitants and is administered,
along with islands of Icaria and Fourni part of the prefecture of
Samos. The capital and main port is the city of Vathy, commonly
called Samos other ports are Karlovasi and Pythagoreio, while other
countries are Kokkari, Manolates, Khora and Pagondas.
The nearest airport is to Pythagoreio.
Climate
The climate of the island is typically Mediterranean. During the
summer months, as most of the Dodecanese islands, Samos is cleared
by the meltemi, a wind that succeeds in part to mitigate the heat,
especially on the northern coast.

flights from Athens as well direct charter flights from abroad
during the summer.
